Reel Texas Poster History

How 'Reel Texas' got started - a few words from the photographer, Steve Justice, about his mission.

In March of 2000, I photographed the Llantex Theater in Llano, Texas with my new digital camera. Upon snapping that picture, I made a bold statement to my wife, Becky. I proclaimed, "We should travel around the state photographing the remaining 'one screen hometown theaters' in Texas. " Little did I know that this seemingly innocent statement would turn into such a long and interesting adventure. Instead of chasing windmills like Don Quixote, our quest became movie picture shows in the Lone Star State.

After six years, our travels reached a conclusion. During that time, we had photographed and cataloged over 250 theaters throughout the Lone Star State. Then the question became, "What will we do with these?" Our question was answered when we met Texana photographer, Rick Vanderpool. Rick had completed several Texas theme posters including "Starring Texas", "Looking for Texas", and "Pits Happen" (please peruse Rick’s fantastic projects at www.stateart.net.) Rick reviewed our work and helped us come up with the idea of putting together a poster identifying some of our favorite movie marquees – thus, giving birth to the poster.

If you remember the golden years of the motion picture shows, you will want to order a poster … or ten! I hope you enjoy the poster as much as Becky and I enjoyed the hunt for "Reel Texas"!
